The end of the 2018-2020 biennium is nothing like we had expected. The preparations for our end of year celebration and the Chapter 45th Anniversary in April had to be put on hold due to COVID-19. The same happened with the visits of DII Director, Gwen White and the Georgia State Organization President, Dr. Kathy Brown. With Diane Lutz as 2020-2022 Beta Sigma President, our chapter is posed to continue “leading women educators and impacting education worldwide”. However, the pandemic has so far prevented the formal installation of the new Beta Sigma officers. We have updated the Beta Sigma website to reflect the end-of-biennium theme. In the current newsletter issue, beautifully put together by Diane, you will see what our sisters have been up to during the shelter in place time, the well-deserved honors received by our members, and projected activities with the Georgia State Organization. For those of you who crave to visit memory lane, I have put together the 2018-2020 Beta Sigma Chapter Biennium History and a selection of biennium images that will show our Chapter at work. Feel free to browse those files and, yes, we are proud of all we have accomplished together. We all look forward to the time when we can get together again, embrace each other and continue our in-person work with the community. Till then, stay strong and well! Marta Patino Douce Beta Sigma President Beta Sigma Chapter is proud to announce the achievements of sisters Audrey Hughes, Rachel Rotz and Liz French.
Audrey Hughes was awarded the Elise Boylston Memorial Foundation Project Grant for $ 720 to work with Clarke Middle School students the coming fall on her project: "Clarke Middle Owls Need STEM". In Audrey's words: "The focus is to purchase engineering kits so that students can work collaboratively to test their construction and problem solving skills while using applied science and math." No doubt an engaging, hands-on experience. Rachel Rotz, our first collegiate member, is the recipient of the 2019 Georgia State Organization Scholarship for $2000. Rachel plans to use the scholarship to complete her Ph.D degree in Hydrogeology at the University of Georgia. Her dissertation defense is planned for this summer. During the 2019 River's Alive volunteer cleanup event, Liz French and her students won first place for the cleanup in the area of Jefferson City Lake and Currie Creek. The effort will provide for an enhanced enjoyment of the Jefferson City outdoor environment. These awards received by our sisters are fair recognition of their talents and excellent work. Congratulations! |
